How to Make Sure Your Word Press Blog is Secure

It has been awhile since we posted any blog tips as we have been busy checking out what is going on in the tech world. Well, we have not forgotten our blogging tips. Today we are going to take a look at some ways to make sure that your Word Press blog is secure. If you do not take some necessary steps, it is possible for anyone to hack your blog and really make a mess of your blog.

Tip 1 – Use a Unique User Name and Password

One of the big errors that a lot of people do is to use either admin or administrator as a user name. This could lead to a compromise of your blog. So you want to make the username something hard enough that it would not easily be found. You next want to make sure that the password is a hard one to break. Make the password contain some combination of upper and lower case letters. You should also include a combination of both characters and symbols. In addition to these tips, you can also use some of the security plugins that are offered through WordPress.

Tip 2 – Make use of the Security Plugins that WordPress offers

In the previous tip, we briefly touched on the fact that WordPress offers some security plugins. These plugins are meant to make sure that no one can get into and break your blog. They help to close the various loop holes and will in the long run help to secure your blog. A couple of these are the WP Security Scan and the Stealth Log in. Again this is just a couple out of the numerous security plugins that are available.

Tip 3 – Understanding Secret Authentication Keys

WordPress not only offers various security plugin, but they also have built into their framework unique authentication keys. When these keys are used on certain files such as the wp-config.php file…it is not easy to get through the walls that these keys create. You would need to go to the WordPress Random Security Keys generator. You would then copy and paste this key into the desired file. These files are found in the file directory of your web host.

Tip 4 – Understanding the Importance of Backing Up Your System

So what can you do if your blog is compromised. The best way to make sure that you won’t be in trouble is to always have a backup handy of your blog. If someone were to get in and change your headers or delete some of your content or even delete all of your content, all is not lost as long as you have a recent backup available so that you can restore your work. There are some backup plugins available such as WordPress Backup, WordPress DB-Manager and DBC Backup.

Tip 5 – Personal protection

In this last tip, we are looking at some additional things that you can do to protect your work. You can always put the database file into a form that would be very difficult to get hold of. You can check the permissions on your most important files and you can protect the .htaccess file. Again these are all ways to that you protect yourself against hackers who are constantly looking for blogs that can easily be hacked.

These tips you have given are VERY important to keep your blog secure. I would also say that you should always make sure your blog is updated to the latest version. A friend of mine had his blog hacked recently and he was STILL using version 2.3!
